Converting Illustrator shapes to 3D

Messaggio da donmac »

Hi, newbie here. I am creating an rfid silicone wristband and, as a beginner, I turned to Booleans to do the job. What seems to be a 2 minute job, turned into hours. I modelled the wristband indeed in 2 minutes, but the model ends up a mess with a gazillion screwed up polygons. Anyway, been reading a lot and it seems booleans are a no-go for the pros, because of the polygon mess it produces. So 2 questions. Why in the hell is there is boolean function if it screws things up? False hope is the worst of torture. And second, what would be the best way to model this? I come from an Illustrator background and only work with exact coordinates, I hate free drawing as it is imperfect. Illustrator shape file (PDF) and boolean model attached.

The best way to model that kind of object is using polygons modelling with SUBD (Subdivision surface).
By starting with a flat circle and create a hole you can make an extrusion of the first shape and adjust edges, at the final steps I used a subdivision surfaces and make cut with knife to make hard edges of it.
Look in to the file attached here I have created all steps from left to right :)

That looks like the way indeed, very cool. My knowledge of the app is too limited though to recreate what you did.
I have 2 similar wristband shapes to make, need to have exact measurements. Can I pay you?

I got it to work, used exact coordinates for the curved parts. Now it is real size and flawless...
Learned a lot today, thanks a million. Confident I can do the other version now.

Very nice technique, a lot faster than how I did it... Thanks for sharing.
